Elsecar: New level crossing to trigger heritage line extension

21 Apr

LXinfoImage1140-Tingle Wood Lane level crossing, Elsecar Heritage RailwayFunds have been raised to provide a level crossing that will allow the Elsecar Heritage Railway in South Yorkshire to be extended to double its present length. Reinstating the level crossing of Tingle Bridge Lane, removed about thirty years ago, will allow the line to be extended by 1 1/4 miles to Cortonwood Colliery, the intended closure of which triggered the 1984-1985 strike by members of the National Union of Mineworkers.

Normally the Office of Rail Regulation will not now permit the opening or re-opening of a level crossing. Presumably there is something exceptional about thye circumstances here?
